Use Apivar strips

4

Apivar strips are a commercial treatment for varroa mites containing the active ingredient amitraz. Amitraz is an insecticide that is toxic to varroa mites but relatively safe for honey bees when used as directed. The strips are placed within the brood nest of the hive, and bees walking over the strips distribute the amitraz throughout the colony through physical contact. The treatment typically lasts for 6-8 weeks, depending on the product instructions and infestation level. Apivar is effective against varroa mites but resistance can develop if overused. Beekeepers should alternate treatments to prevent resistance. Always follow label instructions for dosage, timing, and safety precautions when using Apivar strips. Gloves and a hive tool are recommended for handling the strips and accessing the hive.
