Amitraz (Apivar)
3
Amitraz, the active ingredient in Apivar strips, is primarily used for varroa mite control but can also exhibit some efficacy against tracheal mites. While not specifically labeled for tracheal mites, the systemic action of amitraz within the hive may expose tracheal mites to the compound. This treatment approach is considered when varroa mites are also a concern, providing dual action against both mite types. However, amitraz is not the primary or most effective treatment for tracheal mites alone. Consider this option if a beekeeper is already treating for varroa mites and seeks to gain some additional benefit against tracheal mites. Gloves and a hive tool are standard equipment for applying Apivar strips.
