Allow emergency queen rearing
3
When the colony is confirmed queenless but young larvae under 3 days old are present, allow the bees to raise their own emergency queen. The workers will select larvae and build queen cells, with the new queen emerging approximately 16 days after the egg was laid. Allow an additional 1-2 weeks for the virgin queen to mate and begin laying.
Why It Works
Honey bees can convert worker larvae younger than 3 days old into queens by feeding them royal jelly exclusively. This is a natural recovery mechanism that requires no purchased equipment and preserves the colony's own genetics.
Tips
- Reduce the number of emergency queen cells to 2-3 of the best-positioned ones to encourage a stronger queen
- Avoid disturbing the hive during the queen development period (days 1-16) as vibration can damage developing queens
- Check for eggs 4 weeks after the emergency cells were first observed to confirm successful mating
- Have a backup mated queen available in case the emergency queen fails to mate or is lost on her mating flight
