Scrape propolis from hive surfaces during inspections
3
During routine hive inspections, use a hive tool or flat scraper to remove propolis buildup from frame tops, inner covers, hive body edges, and the queen excluder. Collect scrapings into a dedicated container and store them frozen until you have enough to process.
Why It Works
Bees deposit propolis on every contact surface inside the hive, especially where components meet. Scraping during inspections that are already happening adds minimal extra time and requires no specialized equipment beyond what every beekeeper already owns.
Tips
- Scrape in cool weather when propolis is brittle and chips off cleanly; in warm weather it becomes sticky and difficult to handle
- Expect 10-50 g per hive per season from scraping alone, far less than trap-based methods
- Keep scrapings separate from wax cappings since propolis requires different processing (alcohol tincture vs. melting)
- Clean scrapings by freezing, crumbling, and soaking in cold water -- wax and debris float while propolis sinks
