Hive spacing

2

Space hives further apart to give each colony a clearly defined location that returning bees can identify. In tightly packed apiaries, foragers frequently drift into adjacent hives, which can spread diseases and cause uneven colony strength. Increasing the distance between hives to at least 1-2 meters provides bees with more distinct flight paths and reduces confusion.

Why It Works

Bees memorize spatial landmarks relative to their hive entrance during orientation flights. Greater separation between hives means each colony occupies a more distinct position in the landscape, making it easier for returning foragers to pinpoint their own hive.

Tips

  • Space hives at least 1-2 meters apart; 3 meters or more is ideal where space allows
  • Stagger hives rather than placing them in a straight line
  • If space is limited, combine spacing with visual cues or varied entrance directions
  • Place hives near natural landmarks such as trees, bushes, or fence posts to aid orientation
