Antibiotic treatment (Terramycin)

3

Terramycin (oxytetracycline) is an antibiotic that can be used to treat European Foulbrood (EFB), particularly in milder cases or to prevent secondary infections. Terramycin is more effective against EFB than AFB because EFB bacteria are in the vegetative state and more susceptible to antibiotics. However, like with AFB, Terramycin does not eliminate the underlying causes of EFB or prevent recurrence if stress factors persist. Antibiotic use should be judicious and follow label instructions. It is often used in conjunction with other management practices like requeening or shaking bees. Terramycin treatment for EFB is less controversial than for AFB but should still be used responsibly to minimize resistance risks. A syringe or measuring device is needed for accurate administration of Terramycin, often mixed with powdered sugar.
