Feed smaller patty portions more frequently

4

Offer patties in 100-200 g (4-7 oz) portions sized to match your colony's consumption rate, replacing them every 3-5 days. Smaller portions are consumed before they have time to dry out and harden.

Why It Works

A full 450 g (1 lb) patty can take a moderate colony 1-2 weeks to finish. The outer edges dry and crust over well before the bees reach them, creating waste. Halving or quartering the portion ensures the entire patty stays moist through its short lifespan in the hive.

Tips

  • Monitor consumption at each inspection and adjust portion size accordingly -- strong colonies in buildup may consume 200 g in 2-3 days
  • Wrap unused portions in plastic wrap or wax paper and store in a sealed container at room temperature
  • In hot, dry climates, lean toward 100 g portions replaced every 2-3 days
  • Place fresh portions directly on top bars near the brood nest for fastest uptake
