Scale down to fewer hives
4
Reduce your colony count to match the time you realistically have. Two to three hives are the sweet spot for most hobbyists, requiring roughly 1-2 hours per week during peak season. Each additional hive adds roughly 20-30 minutes of weekly work for inspections, feeding, and treatments.
Why It Works
Neglected hives develop mite loads, swarm unexpectedly, or starve, creating more emergency work than the beekeeper saved by skipping routine checks. Running fewer, well-managed colonies produces healthier bees and often more honey per hive than a larger, under-managed apiary.
Tips
- Sell, donate, or combine surplus colonies in early fall when demand from other beekeepers is highest
- Keep at least two hives so you can compare colony health and share resources between them
- If you want to expand later, increase by one hive at a time and reassess your available hours after a full season
