Full protective gear always

4

Wear a complete set of bee protective gear every time you work with hives, especially if you have a known sting allergy or heightened sensitivity. This means a full bee suit or jacket, veil, and gloves with no gaps at wrists, ankles, or neckline.

Why It Works

Full protective gear creates a physical barrier between you and defensive bees, virtually eliminating sting exposure during routine hive inspections. Even gentle colonies can become defensive during certain conditions such as nectar dearths, queenlessness, or stormy weather.

Tips

  • Inspect your suit before each use for tears, broken zippers, or loose elastic
  • Tuck pant legs into boots and secure with rubber bands or Velcro straps
  • Choose light-colored gear, as dark colors can trigger defensive behavior in bees
  • Wash your suit regularly to remove alarm pheromones from previous stings
  • Keep a backup suit available in case your primary gear is damaged
