Fumigate with PDB crystals
3
Place paradichlorobenzene (PDB) crystals on top of stacked supers sealed with tape or in airtight containers. PDB releases heavy vapors that settle downward, killing wax moth eggs, larvae, and adults over 2-3 weeks at temperatures above 21°C (70°F).
Why It Works
PDB vapor is heavier than air, so it penetrates downward through stacked comb. At sufficient concentration in a sealed space, it is lethal to all wax moth life stages. PDB does not damage wax or wooden equipment.
Tips
- Use approximately 3 tbsp (45 g) of PDB crystals per standard 10-frame deep super
- Air out treated combs for at least 2-3 days before returning them to hives, as PDB residue is toxic to bees
- Do not use mothballs (naphthalene) — naphthalene is absorbed into wax and contaminates honey
- PDB is not approved for organic beekeeping; use BT or freezing if organic certification is required
- Store treated stacks in a cool, shaded area and check crystal levels monthly, replenishing as they sublimate
