Set up a clean water source near the apiary
3
Place a dedicated, clean water source within 15 meters of your hives so bees drink from it instead of from puddles in pesticide-treated fields, drainage ditches, or chemically treated swimming pools. A shallow basin with landing stones or floating corks gives bees safe access without drowning risk.
Why It Works
Bees need water daily for cooling the hive and diluting honey to feed larvae. Without a nearby source, foragers travel to the nearest available water -- often contaminated runoff or puddles in sprayed areas. Once scout bees establish a water source, the colony commits to it. Providing clean water early in the season (before scouts find contaminated alternatives) trains the colony to use your safe source.
Tips
- Refresh water every 2-3 days to prevent mosquito breeding and algae growth
- Add a small amount of salt (1/4 tsp per liter) to make your source more attractive than competitors -- bees prefer mineral-rich water
- Place the water in partial shade to slow evaporation and keep it cool
- Use a dripping faucet or fountain feature; bees are attracted to the sound and movement of running water
- Establish your water source in early spring before colonies build up and scouts range widely
