Elevated hive stands
2
Raise hives off the ground on sturdy stands at least 30-45 cm (12-18 inches) high to make it harder for mice to reach hive entrances. Use smooth-surfaced metal or painted wooden legs that reduce grip for climbing rodents. This method works best as part of a combined approach alongside mouse guards.
Why It Works
Elevation removes the hive from ground-level access where mice naturally travel along walls and objects. Smooth stand surfaces reduce a mouse's ability to climb, though determined mice can still reach hives if the surface provides grip.
Tips
- Use metal stand legs or wrap wooden legs with sheet metal to create a slippery surface
- Do not rely on elevation alone; always pair with mouse guards for reliable protection
- Ensure stands are stable enough to withstand winter winds
- Keep the area around stands clear of tall grass and debris that mice use as cover
