Strengthen colonies before the nectar flow

3

Ensure colonies are at peak population -- covering at least 8-10 frames of bees in a Langstroth hive -- by the start of the main nectar flow. A strong colony can collect 2-3 times more nectar than a weak one during the same flow period.

Steps

  1. Assess colony strength in early spring. Count frames of bees and brood. Colonies covering fewer than 6 frames may need support.
  2. Equalize strong and weak colonies. Donate 1-2 frames of capped brood from booming hives to weaker ones, ensuring you do not transfer the queen.
  3. Add supers early. Place honey supers before the colony runs out of storage space to prevent the "backfilling" that triggers swarming and cuts honey yields.
  4. Prevent swarming. Split congested colonies or use checkerboarding to open up brood nest space.

Tips

  • Feed 1:1 sugar syrup in early spring only if natural forage is scarce, to stimulate brood rearing
  • Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent moisture buildup that stresses colonies
  • Combine hopelessly weak colonies rather than nursing them through the season at the expense of honey production
