Strong colonies entering winter
4
Ensuring colonies are strong and populous going into winter is a key factor in overwintering success. Stronger colonies have a larger bee population, which generates more heat and is better able to regulate hive temperature during cold weather. Combining weak colonies in the fall can create stronger, more viable overwintering units. Strong colonies are also better equipped to withstand mite infestations and diseases. Colony strength in late fall is a significant predictor of overwintering survival. Beekeepers should assess colony strength and take measures to boost weak colonies or combine them before winter.
