Gentle handling technique
5
Move slowly and deliberately throughout the inspection. Lift frames straight up, avoid rolling or crushing bees, and set frames down gently. Calm, predictable movements reduce the release of alarm pheromones and keep the colony's defensive response low.
Why It Works
Bees detect vibrations and sudden pressure changes through mechanoreceptors. Jerky movements and frame banging trigger guard bees to release alarm pheromone, which recruits more defenders. Smooth handling keeps vibrations minimal and prevents the escalation cycle from starting.
Tips
- Pry frames loose with a hive tool using steady, even pressure rather than sharp pops.
- Hold frames over the open hive so any dislodged bees fall back inside.
- If bees begin head-butting or buzzing loudly, pause for a few seconds before continuing.
- Inspect during warm, sunny, low-wind afternoons when foragers are out and the hive population is reduced.
- Limit inspection time to 10-15 minutes to reduce overall disturbance.
