Requeening with gentler stock
5
Replace an aggressive queen with one bred from docile lineages such as Italian (Apis mellifera ligustica) or Carniolan (A. m. carnica) stock. Introduce the new queen in a candy-plug cage so the colony acclimates over 3-5 days before direct contact. Remove or kill the old queen 24 hours before introduction for best acceptance rates.
Why It Works
Colony temperament is primarily determined by the queen's genetics. Worker bees are her offspring, so within 4-6 weeks of successful requeening the entire forager population carries the new queen's gentler traits. Studies at the USDA Baton Rouge Bee Lab confirm that colonies headed by instrumentally inseminated gentle-stock queens show 60-80% fewer stinging events during inspections.
Tips
- Order queens from reputable breeders who test for defensive behavior, hygienic behavior, and mite resistance
- Verify queen acceptance 5-7 days after introduction by checking for fresh eggs in a normal laying pattern
- Requeen in late spring or early summer when colony acceptance rates are highest and brood buildup is strong
