Switch to a round-wire metal excluder

2

Replace plastic or stamped-metal excluders with a precision-welded round-wire metal excluder. Round-wire models have smooth, cylindrical wires that accumulate less propolis than the flat edges on stamped metal or the textured surfaces of injection-molded plastic.

Why It Works

Bees deposit propolis on rough or sharp surfaces more readily than on smooth ones. Round-wire excluders (such as those from Pierco or Mann Lake) have polished wire surfaces that resist buildup. Their rigid construction also holds consistent 4.2 mm spacing, reducing the uneven gaps that trigger propolis sealing. Many beekeepers report needing to clean round-wire excluders half as often as plastic ones.

Tips

  • Stainless steel round-wire excluders cost $10-$20 more than plastic but last 10+ years with proper care
  • Avoid the cheapest welded-wire imports, which may have inconsistent wire spacing that traps bees or allows the queen through
  • If switching from plastic, compare the grid dimensions to ensure compatibility with your hive body size (Langstroth 8-frame vs. 10-frame)
