Use a candy plug for timed queen release
3
Plug the queen cage exit with a candy made from powdered sugar and honey so workers must chew through it to free the queen. The chewing process takes 1-3 days, providing a built-in timer that ensures the colony has had enough pheromone exposure before the queen walks free.
Why It Works
Direct release of a caged queen often fails because workers have not fully accepted her scent. The candy plug forces a delay of 24-72 hours during which bees feeding on the candy simultaneously absorb the queen's pheromones. By the time the plug is consumed, the colony has already incorporated her chemical signature into the hive scent profile.
Tips
- Make candy by kneading powdered sugar with a small amount of honey until it forms a firm, dough-like consistency
- Pack the plug firmly but not rock-hard; bees should chew through in 1-3 days
- Check after 3 days to confirm the queen has been released and is laying
- If using a commercially supplied cage, verify the candy plug is fresh and not dried out, as hardened candy can trap the queen indefinitely
- In hot weather, candy softens faster; check sooner to prevent premature release before acceptance
