PDB crystals (paradichlorobenzene)

4

PDB crystals, containing paradichlorobenzene, are a fumigant used to protect stored honey bee combs from wax moth infestations. PDB crystals release heavy vapors that are toxic to wax moth larvae and eggs. Stored combs are stacked in airtight containers or sealed stacks, and PDB crystals are placed on top. The fumigation process typically lasts for several weeks, depending on temperature and humidity. Before reusing treated combs, they must be thoroughly aired out for several days to remove PDB residues, as PDB is toxic to bees and can contaminate honey. PDB is a commercial chemical control and requires airtight containers for effective fumigation. PDB crystals themselves are the essential supply.
