Prioritize goals: milk, meat, or eggs?
5
Define your primary goal before choosing an animal. Chickens are the most productive egg layers (250-300 eggs/year for breeds like Rhode Island Red or Leghorn). Nigerian Dwarf and Nubian goats are the standard backyard dairy choices, producing 1-2 quarts of milk daily. Rabbits (New Zealand White, Californian) are the most space-efficient meat producers, reaching butcher weight in 8-12 weeks.
Why It Works
Each species has evolved or been bred for specific outputs. Trying to get milk from chickens or eggs from goats wastes time and money. Starting with a clear goal eliminates most species from consideration immediately.
Tips
- Dual-purpose chicken breeds (Plymouth Rock, Orpington) offer both eggs and meat but excel at neither compared to specialists
- If you want multiple products, raise multiple species rather than expecting one animal to do everything
