Supplement the main diet with species-appropriate extras
4
Provide supplements beyond the base feed that each species requires. Goats and rabbits need unlimited access to good-quality hay (timothy or orchard grass) for digestive fiber. Chickens need insoluble grit (small stones) to grind food in their gizzard and oyster shell for calcium to produce strong eggshells. Goats need loose mineral supplements formulated specifically for goats, offered free-choice.
Why It Works
Commercial feed alone does not cover all nutritional needs. Without grit, chickens cannot properly digest whole grains. Without supplemental calcium, laying hens pull calcium from their own bones, leading to osteoporosis. Goats in many regions are deficient in copper and selenium unless supplemented.
Tips
- Offer grit and oyster shell in separate containers — chickens self-regulate intake
- Vegetable scraps and leafy greens are fine treats but should not exceed 10% of the diet
- Never feed avocado, chocolate, onions, or raw beans to any livestock — all are toxic
