Learn to recognize signs of illness early
5
Observe your animals daily and learn to distinguish normal behavior from warning signs. Key symptoms across species include lethargy, isolation from the group, loss of appetite, abnormal droppings (diarrhea, blood, unusual color), coughing or sneezing, discharge from eyes or nose, limping, and sudden drops in egg or milk production.
Why It Works
Early detection is critical because many livestock diseases progress rapidly. A chicken showing respiratory symptoms in the morning may be dead by evening if not treated. Knowing your animals' normal behavior lets you spot subtle changes before they become emergencies.
Tips
- Spend a few minutes watching your animals during daily feeding — healthy animals are alert and eager to eat
- Ruffled feathers in chickens or a rough coat in goats/rabbits often signals illness
- Keep a basic animal health reference book on hand for your species
