Install predator-proof latches on doors and lids

Use latches that require two simultaneous actions to open, such as a slide bolt secured with a carabiner, or a hook-and-eye latch combined with a spring clip. Simple latches, hooks, and turn handles are not sufficient — raccoons can open them.

Why It Works

Raccoons have highly dexterous front paws and can manipulate simple latches, lift hooks, and turn knobs. Two-step latches require either opposable thumbs or two simultaneous actions, which raccoons cannot perform. This is one of the most common failure points in otherwise secure coops.

Tips

• Test your latch by trying to open it with one hand while wearing thick gloves — if you can, a raccoon probably can too
• Check all latches at dusk as part of your lockup routine
• Padlocks are the most secure option but least convenient for daily use
