Use Floating Row Covers

4

Drape lightweight fabric row covers over vulnerable plants to create a physical barrier against insect pests. Secure the fabric over wire hoops or lay it directly on plants, anchoring edges firmly to the ground with soil, rocks, or landscape pins to prevent pests from crawling underneath. Install covers before target pests become active in the season for best results.

Why It Works

Row covers physically block insects like flea beetles, cabbage moths, and squash vine borers from reaching plants to feed or lay eggs. The fabric transmits sunlight and allows rain to pass through while keeping pests out entirely. This eliminates the need for any pesticide application on covered crops.

Tips

  • Remove covers from crops requiring insect pollination (squash, cucumbers, melons) once flowering begins, or hand-pollinate
  • Use lightweight covers (15-20 g/m²) in warm weather to avoid overheating plants
  • Check underneath periodically for pests that may have been trapped inside
  • Secure edges completely -- even small gaps allow pest entry
  • Replace torn or degraded fabric promptly as holes defeat the purpose
