Seed catalogs and plant tags use abbreviations to indicate resistance: on tomatoes, V means Verticillium wilt, F means Fusarium wilt, N means nematodes, and T means tobacco mosaic virus. Similar resistance codes exist for cucumbers, peppers, and beans.

Why It Works

Resistant varieties carry genes that prevent or limit infection by specific pathogens. The plant either blocks the pathogen entirely or restricts its spread internally, reducing damage without any chemical intervention. This is the most labor-free form of disease management available to home gardeners.
