Use Pre-emergent Herbicides (Corn Gluten Meal)
3
Apply corn gluten meal at a rate of 20 lbs per 1,000 sq ft in early spring, 4-6 weeks before expected weed germination. Spread evenly across garden beds and water lightly to activate. Do not disturb the soil surface after application.
Why It Works
Corn gluten meal releases dipeptides that inhibit root formation in germinating seeds, discovered by Dr. Nick Christians at Iowa State University. It prevents establishment of crabgrass, dandelions, and other common weeds while providing approximately 10% nitrogen by weight, feeding existing plants as it suppresses new weeds.
Tips
- Apply only to established beds; corn gluten meal will also inhibit desired seeds from germinating
- Reapply in early fall for season-long suppression of winter annual weeds
- Effectiveness improves after 2-3 consecutive years of application
