Hanging Baskets

Grow strawberries, herbs, cherry tomatoes, or trailing flowers in hanging baskets suspended from hooks, pergolas, or balcony railings. This approach uses overhead space that would otherwise go unused, freeing up ground and patio surfaces for other containers or beds.

Why It Works

Hanging baskets add a growing layer above ground level without consuming any floor space. They also elevate plants away from ground-dwelling pests like slugs and improve air circulation around foliage, reducing disease risk.

Tips

• Use baskets at least 12 inches in diameter to provide adequate root room and moisture retention
• Water daily in warm weather, as exposed baskets dry out faster than ground-level pots
• Line wire baskets with coco coir or sphagnum moss to retain moisture while allowing drainage
• Check that hooks and mounting points can support the weight of a fully watered basket (often 15-25 pounds)
