Use Sterile Seed Starting Mix and Clean Containers
5
Start seeds in a purchased, sterile seed-starting mix using clean or new containers. Never use garden soil, which is too dense, may contain weed seeds, and often harbors pathogens. If reusing pots, scrub them with soap and soak in a 10% bleach solution before rinsing thoroughly.
Why It Works
Sterile mix eliminates soil-borne fungi that cause damping off, the most common killer of young seedlings. The lightweight texture provides proper drainage and aeration, giving delicate roots room to develop without sitting in waterlogged conditions.
Tips
- Moisten the mix before filling containers so it absorbs water evenly
- Avoid compressing the mix too tightly; seedling roots need loose soil to grow through
- Pre-filled seed starting trays are a convenient alternative for beginners
