Install Fencing

5

Erect appropriate fencing around your garden perimeter to create a physical barrier against animal pests. For rabbits, use chicken wire or hardware cloth at least 2 feet high, buried 6 inches deep or bent outward at ground level to prevent digging underneath. For deer, fences need to be 7-8 feet tall, or use shorter fences angled outward or doubled up. Electric fencing is also effective where local ordinances allow it.

Why It Works

Physical barriers are the most reliable long-term deterrent because animals simply cannot reach your plants. Unlike repellents or scare devices, fencing does not lose effectiveness over time as animals habituate.

Tips

  • Match the fence type to your target pest -- rabbit fencing alone will not stop deer
  • Bury the bottom edge at least 6 inches deep to prevent rabbits and groundhogs from digging under
  • Inspect fencing regularly for gaps, rust, or damage
  • Add a gate with a secure latch to maintain easy garden access
  • Consider combining a shorter deer fence with angled extensions to save on materials
