Follow the 20-20-20 rule and optimize your screen habits

5

Combine regular focus breaks, optimized display settings, and conscious blinking to address the three main causes of digital eye strain.

Steps

  1. Apply the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This relaxes the ciliary muscles that control focus.
  2. Match screen brightness: Adjust your display so it blends with the room's ambient light rather than glaring or appearing dim.
  3. Increase text size and contrast: Scale up until you can read comfortably without leaning in.
  4. Enable a blue-light filter: Use Night Shift (Mac/iOS), Night Light (Windows), or f.lux in the evening to reduce sleep-cycle disruption.
  5. Blink deliberately: Screen use cuts blink rate roughly in half. If dryness persists, use preservative-free artificial tears.
  6. Position your monitor: Place it about arm's length away with the top of the screen at or just below eye level.

Why It Works

Digital eye strain results from sustained near-focus, reduced blinking, and brightness mismatches. This routine breaks all three patterns with minimal disruption to your workflow.
