Use fans and evaporative cooling to lower perceived temperature
4
Position fans to move air across skin and combine them with evaporating water for additional cooling, especially effective in dry climates.
Why It Works
Moving air speeds up sweat evaporation, making you feel several degrees cooler without changing room temperature. Adding a source of evaporating water amplifies the effect. Evaporative cooling works best when humidity is below about 50%; in humid conditions the benefit is minimal.
Steps
- Set ceiling fans to counterclockwise in summer so they push air downward, creating a cooling breeze.
- Position portable fans to direct airflow where people sit or sleep.
- Place a bowl of ice in front of a fan so the air picks up cooler temperatures before reaching you.
- Hang a damp sheet in front of an open window or fan to add light evaporative cooling as the water dries.
Tips
- Fans cool people, not rooms—turn them off when you leave
- In humid climates above 50% relative humidity, skip the evaporative methods and rely on airflow alone
