Switch to LEDs, Unplug Electronics, and Adjust Thermostat

5

Description

Targeting major energy users like lighting, standby power ('vampire load'), and HVAC offers significant savings potential.

Recipe/Instructions

  1. LED Lighting: Replace traditional incandescent or halogen light bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs. LEDs use up to 80-90% less energy and last much longer.
  2. Unplug / Use Smart Strips: Unplug chargers (phone, laptop), TVs, game consoles, coffee makers, and other electronics when not in use. Many devices draw power even when turned 'off' (vampire load). Alternatively, plug these devices into smart power strips that automatically cut power when devices are off or allow you to switch them all off easily.
  3. Thermostat Settings: Adjust your thermostat conservatively. Lower it by a few degrees in winter (especially when sleeping or away) and raise it by a few degrees in summer. Use programmable or smart thermostats to automate these temperature setbacks.
  4. Turn Off Lights: Make it a habit to turn off lights when leaving a room.
