Optimize Appliance Usage
4
Description
Using large appliances efficiently reduces their energy consumption.
Recipe/Instructions
- Laundry: Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible, as heating water accounts for most of the energy used. Always wash full loads. Air dry clothes on a line or rack instead of using the dryer when feasible.
- Dishwasher: Run the dishwasher only when it's fully loaded. Use the air-dry setting instead of heated drying if available.
- Refrigerator/Freezer: Keep fridge and freezer coils clean (check manual for location, usually back or bottom) for efficient operation. Ensure door seals are tight (test by closing door on a dollar bill; if it slides out easily, seals may need replacing). Keep freezer relatively full (but allow air circulation) to maintain cold temperature more efficiently.
- Oven/Stove: Use smaller appliances like microwaves or toaster ovens for smaller meals, as they use less energy than a full-size oven. Keep oven door closed while cooking.
