Check and adjust the flapper and chain

5

The most common cause of a running toilet is a flapper that doesn't seal properly or a chain that's the wrong length. A quick inspection and adjustment usually fixes it in under five minutes.

Steps

  1. Lift the tank lid and inspect the rubber flapper over the drain hole. Look for warping, cracks, or mineral buildup that prevents a tight seal.
  2. Check the chain connecting the flush lever to the flapper. It should have about 1/2 inch of slack when the flapper is closed.
  3. If the chain is too long, it can get caught under the flapper. Too short, and it holds the flapper slightly open. Adjust by moving the hook to a different chain link.
  4. If the flapper is damaged or worn, pull it off the overflow tube ears and snap a new one in place.

Tips

  • Bring the old flapper to the hardware store to match the size and style
  • Universal flappers fit most toilets but check your model if you have a specialty flush valve
  • Clean mineral deposits off the flapper seat with vinegar and a cloth before installing a new flapper
