Check and adjust the flapper and chain
5
The most common cause of a running toilet is a flapper that doesn't seal properly or a chain that's the wrong length. A quick inspection and adjustment usually fixes it in under five minutes.
Steps
- Lift the tank lid and inspect the rubber flapper over the drain hole. Look for warping, cracks, or mineral buildup that prevents a tight seal.
- Check the chain connecting the flush lever to the flapper. It should have about 1/2 inch of slack when the flapper is closed.
- If the chain is too long, it can get caught under the flapper. Too short, and it holds the flapper slightly open. Adjust by moving the hook to a different chain link.
- If the flapper is damaged or worn, pull it off the overflow tube ears and snap a new one in place.
Tips
- Bring the old flapper to the hardware store to match the size and style
- Universal flappers fit most toilets but check your model if you have a specialty flush valve
- Clean mineral deposits off the flapper seat with vinegar and a cloth before installing a new flapper
