Spray penetrating lubricant for a quick temporary fix

3

Spray a penetrating lubricant like WD-40 into the hinge joints for an instant silence. This is a fast temporary fix -- WD-40 is a water displacer and penetrant, not a true lubricant, so it evaporates within days and the squeak will return.

Steps

  1. Spray the lubricant onto the top of the hinge pin and into the joints.
  2. Hold a rag beneath the hinge to catch drips.
  3. Open and close the door several times to work the product into the mechanism.
  4. Wipe away excess with the rag.

Tips

  • Best as a stopgap until you can apply a lasting lubricant like silicone spray or white lithium grease
  • If the squeak returns within a week, the hinge pin likely needs cleaning and proper lubrication
