Unscrew or Wiggle Out Anchors

3

The first approach to try for most plastic wall anchors. Screw-in types back out with a screwdriver, while expansion anchors can often be gripped and pulled free with pliers. When an anchor resists, it can be pushed into the wall cavity or trimmed flush and patched over.

Steps

  1. Remove the screw from the anchor if one is still in place.
  2. For screw-in (threaded) anchors, insert a screwdriver and turn counter-clockwise until the anchor backs out of the wall.
  3. For expansion anchors, grip the outer lip with needle-nose pliers and gently wiggle while pulling straight out.
  4. If the anchor won't budge, push it slightly into the wall cavity with a screwdriver or nail set so it sits behind the drywall surface.
  5. Alternatively, use a utility knife to cut the anchor lip flush with the wall.

Finishing

Fill the hole or trimmed spot with spackle, let it dry, and sand smooth before repainting.
