Adjust Strike Plate Position
4
When the hinges are tight but the latch still misses, the strike plate itself needs to be repositioned to meet the latch bolt.
Steps
Close the door slowly and mark where the latch bolt contacts the strike plate. If it hits too high or too low, remove the two strike plate screws, shift the plate in the needed direction, and re-drill pilot holes. If the latch is only slightly off, enlarging the strike plate opening with a metal file may be enough. Test the latch engagement before fully tightening.
When to Use This Fix
This is the right approach when hinge screws are already snug but seasonal settling or minor framing movement has shifted the jamb relative to the door. It is also useful after replacing hinges or a doorknob with slightly different dimensions.
