Scrub grout with a baking soda paste

4

Mix baking soda and water into a thick paste (about 3:1 ratio) and spread it along the grout lines. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes so the mild abrasive and alkaline pH can loosen embedded grime, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush.

Why It Works

Baking soda is a gentle abrasive that physically scours grime without scratching ceramic or porcelain tile. Its alkaline pH (around 8.3) helps dissolve grease and organic buildup. No harsh fumes, no chemical residue.

Skip the Vinegar

Baking soda (a base) and vinegar (an acid) neutralize each other on contact, producing water and carbon dioxide. The fizzing looks impressive but eliminates both cleaning agents, leaving a weak sodium acetate solution with almost no cleaning power. Use the paste on its own.

Tips

  • Work in small sections and rinse thoroughly with clean water before moving on
  • For stubborn stains, let the paste sit up to 30 minutes
  • Repeat monthly to prevent buildup rather than waiting for heavy discoloration
