Use cedar shoe trees
4
Cedar shoe trees absorb moisture and impart a natural fresh scent while maintaining shoe shape. Insert them after every wear — no daily effort beyond that is required.
Why It Works
Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is naturally porous and antimicrobial. Its wood absorbs moisture from the shoe lining while aromatic oils — primarily cedrol and cedrene — inhibit odor-causing bacteria. The shaped form also prevents leather from developing creases and cracks, extending shoe life.
Steps
- Purchase cedar shoe trees sized to fit your shoes snugly. Adjustable split-toe models ($15-25 per pair) fit the widest range of shoe shapes.
- Insert immediately after removing shoes, while the lining is still warm and damp.
- Leave in place until the next wear.
Tips
- Lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper every 2-3 months to refresh the cedar scent
- One pair of quality cedar trees lasts 5+ years
- Prioritize cedar trees for leather dress shoes, which trap the most heat and moisture
