Apply salicylic acid or glycolic acid products post-shave

4

Chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid (BHA) and glycolic acid (AHA) dissolve dead skin cells and excess sebum that trap hair beneath the surface, preventing ingrown hairs before they form.

Why It Works

Salicylic acid (0.5-2%) is oil-soluble, so it penetrates into pores and follicles to clear blockages from the inside. Glycolic acid (5-10%) is water-soluble and works on the skin surface, dissolving the "glue" between dead cells so new hairs can push through cleanly. Both reduce the dead-skin buildup that forces hairs to curl back into the follicle.

Steps

  1. Wait 10-15 minutes after shaving before applying to avoid stinging on freshly shaved skin.
  2. Apply a thin layer of a BHA or AHA product (toner, lotion, or pre-soaked pads) to shaved areas.
  3. Start every other day and increase to daily use once skin tolerates it without redness or dryness.

Tips

  • Salicylic acid is generally better for acne-prone or oily skin; glycolic acid suits normal to dry skin
  • Always use sunscreen on treated areas — AHAs increase UV sensitivity by up to 45%
  • Brands like Tend Skin, PFB Vanish, and The Ordinary offer affordable dedicated ingrown hair products
