Switch to natural fibers and leather-soled shoes

3

Certain materials generate more static electricity than others. Switching to natural fibers and leather-soled shoes significantly reduces static charge buildup in dry winter conditions.

Why It Works

Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are poor conductors, so electrons accumulate on their surface rather than dissipating. Natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and linen allow charge to spread and dissipate more readily. Rubber and plastic shoe soles insulate you from the ground, trapping charge on your body, while leather soles are slightly conductive and allow gradual grounding.

Tips

  • Wear cotton, wool, or linen rather than polyester, nylon, or acrylic to minimize charge buildup
  • Choose leather-soled shoes over rubber or plastic soles, especially on carpeted floors
  • Use fabric softener or dryer sheets in laundry — they coat fibers with anti-static surfactants that reduce friction-generated charge
  • Anti-static shoes with conductive soles are available for static-sensitive work environments
