Run an essential oil diffuser with antimicrobial oils
3
An ultrasonic diffuser disperses essential oils as a fine mist, freshening the air and helping neutralize odor-causing bacteria. Tea tree, eucalyptus, and lemon oils are particularly effective due to their natural antimicrobial properties.
Why It Works
Tea tree oil contains terpinen-4-ol, a compound shown in lab studies to kill bacteria and mold spores on contact. Eucalyptus oil contains 1,8-cineole, which inhibits bacterial growth. These oils do more than mask smells — they reduce the microorganisms that produce them.
Tips
- Use 5-10 drops per diffuser session and run for 30-60 minutes at a time
- Keep diffusers away from cats — tea tree and eucalyptus oils are toxic to felines
- Ventilate the room periodically rather than running the diffuser continuously
