Increase indoor humidity with a humidifier

5

Run a humidifier in rooms where you spend the most time to keep indoor humidity between 30% and 50%. Dry winter air allows static charges to build on your body with no path to dissipate, so adding moisture is the single most effective fix.

Why It Works

Water vapor in the air creates a thin conductive film on surfaces and skin, letting static charges bleed off continuously rather than accumulating to a painful zap. Below 30% relative humidity, static buildup accelerates dramatically.

Tips

  • Use a hygrometer to monitor levels -- staying above 40% eliminates most shocks
  • Houseplants and a pot of water simmering on the stove also raise humidity, but a dedicated humidifier is more consistent
  • Clean humidifiers weekly to prevent mold and mineral dust
