Coil and store cables properly to prevent stress
4
Loose, gentle coiling prevents the internal wire fatigue that causes fraying. Use the over-under (roadie wrap) method or a simple figure-eight loop instead of wrapping cables tightly around your hand or device. Secure the coil with a Velcro strap or soft twist tie — never cinch it tight.
Why It Works
Tight winding forces sharp bends at the same spots every time, fatiguing and eventually snapping the tiny copper conductors inside the sheath. Loose coils distribute stress evenly so no single point takes repeated damage.
Tips
- Store coiled cables in a pouch, drawer organizer, or cable box — loose tangles with other items cause kinks too
- The over-under method alternates coil direction each loop, preventing the cable from developing a permanent twist
- Velcro cable ties are reusable and gentler than rubber bands or zip ties
