Practice Partial Charging & Avoid Extremes
5
Description
Lithium-ion batteries experience stress at very high and very low charge levels, and degrade faster under heat.
Recipe/Instructions
- Avoid Full Drain/Charge Cycles: It's generally better to keep the battery charge level between 20% and 80% most of the time, rather than consistently draining it to 0% or charging it to 100%. Short, partial charges are fine.
- Unplug Near Full: While modern phones stop charging at 100%, leaving it plugged in for extended periods (like overnight every night) might still contribute slightly to long-term degradation for some models/users, though built-in protections minimize this. Unplugging soon after it reaches 80-90% can be beneficial.
- Avoid Extreme Heat: Heat is a major enemy of battery lifespan. Don't leave your phone in direct sunlight, hot cars, or use resource-intensive apps (like heavy gaming) while charging, especially in warm environments. Remove bulky cases during charging if the phone gets noticeably warm.
- Avoid Extreme Cold: Very cold temperatures can temporarily reduce battery performance (it recovers when warmed up) but generally cause less long-term damage than heat.
