Use a portable jump starter pack
4
A portable lithium-ion jump starter lets you revive a dead battery without needing a second vehicle. Keep it charged and stored in your trunk for roadside emergencies.
Steps
- Verify the pack is charged before connecting.
- Attach the RED clamp to the battery's positive (+) terminal.
- Attach the BLACK clamp to the battery's negative (-) terminal, or to an unpainted metal ground point on the engine block if the pack's instructions specify.
- Power on the jump starter and attempt to start the vehicle.
- Disconnect clamps once the engine is running -- black first, then red.
- Drive at least 15-20 minutes to let the alternator recharge the battery.
Tips
- Recharge the pack after every use and top it off every 3-6 months
- Most packs also work as USB power banks and include LED flashlights
- Check that the pack's peak amperage rating matches your engine size -- larger engines need higher-rated packs
