Use a portable jump starter pack

4

A portable lithium-ion jump starter lets you revive a dead battery without needing a second vehicle. Keep it charged and stored in your trunk for roadside emergencies.

Steps

  1. Verify the pack is charged before connecting.
  2. Attach the RED clamp to the battery's positive (+) terminal.
  3. Attach the BLACK clamp to the battery's negative (-) terminal, or to an unpainted metal ground point on the engine block if the pack's instructions specify.
  4. Power on the jump starter and attempt to start the vehicle.
  5. Disconnect clamps once the engine is running -- black first, then red.
  6. Drive at least 15-20 minutes to let the alternator recharge the battery.

Tips

  • Recharge the pack after every use and top it off every 3-6 months
  • Most packs also work as USB power banks and include LED flashlights
  • Check that the pack's peak amperage rating matches your engine size -- larger engines need higher-rated packs
