Use traction mats or recovery boards for instant grip
4
Purpose-built traction mats (such as MAXTRAX or X-Bull recovery boards) have aggressive tread patterns that give tires something solid to bite into. Keeping a set in your vehicle during winter provides a reliable self-rescue option on snow and ice.
Steps
- Clear around the tires: Remove snow and ice from in front of and under the drive wheels so the mats sit as close to the tire as possible.
- Wedge the mats under the tires: Place each mat firmly against the front edge of the drive tires, angled slightly so the tire can climb onto it.
- Drive out slowly: Apply gentle throttle in a low gear and let the tire roll onto the mat. The textured surface grips both the tire and the ground.
- Retrieve the mats: Once free, stop and pick up the boards for future use.
Tips
- Mats work on mud, sand, and gravel too -- a versatile year-round investment
- Budget options start around $30-40 for a pair; premium off-road boards run $200+
- Store them upright behind a seat or in the trunk so they are always accessible
