Apply a glueless self-adhesive patch
4
Fix a puncture quickly using a self-adhesive patch that sticks directly to the tube without vulcanizing cement. This is the fastest patching method and works well for roadside or trailside emergencies.
Steps
- Remove the wheel and tube: Release the brake, remove the wheel, unseat one side of the tire with tire levers, and pull out the tube.
- Find the puncture: Inflate the tube slightly and listen for hissing or submerge it in water to spot bubbles.
- Prepare the surface: Roughen the area around the hole with the sandpaper included in the patch kit. Wipe away debris.
- Apply the patch: Peel the glueless patch from its backing and press it firmly over the puncture, holding for 30 seconds with strong pressure on the edges.
- Inspect and reassemble: Check inside the tire for embedded sharp objects, reinstall the tube, reseat the tire bead, inflate to sidewall pressure, and remount the wheel.
Tips
- Glueless patches are reliable for small punctures but may not hold long-term under high tire pressure (above 80 psi)
- Many riders carry glueless patches as a get-home fix and follow up with a vulcanized patch or tube replacement later
- Store patches in a sealed bag; exposure to air degrades the adhesive over time
