Clean thoroughly and deodorize with baking soda, charcoal, or vinegar

5

Remove the odor source first, then neutralize lingering smells with natural absorbers like baking soda or activated charcoal. A vinegar wipe on hard surfaces handles stubborn odors without harsh chemicals.

Steps

  1. Remove all trash and debris: Take out old food wrappers, bottles, wet items, and anything that could be trapping smells.
  2. Vacuum thoroughly: Hit carpets, floor mats, upholstery, and under the seats to pull up odor-trapping particles.
  3. Apply baking soda: Sprinkle generously on carpets and fabric seats. Let it sit several hours or overnight, then vacuum it up. For ongoing absorption, place an open box under a seat.
  4. Wipe hard surfaces with vinegar: Dampen a microfiber cloth with a 50/50 white vinegar and water mix. Wipe the dashboard, door panels, and console. The vinegar smell fades as it dries.
  5. Replace the cabin air filter: A dirty filter traps and recirculates stale odors through the ventilation system.
  6. Ventilate: Crack windows when parked in a safe spot to let fresh air circulate.

Tips

  • Activated charcoal briquettes (plain, no lighter fluid) work as a long-term alternative to baking soda
  • Test the vinegar solution on an inconspicuous area first to check for discoloration
  • Address spills immediately to prevent odors from setting into fabric
