Wipe Down, Degrease, Rinse, Dry, and Lubricate
4
Description
This standard procedure removes grit and old lube before applying fresh lubricant, ensuring optimal chain performance.
Recipe/Instructions
- Wipe Chain: Use a clean rag to wipe off surface dirt and grime from the chain. Backpedal the chain through the rag.
- Degrease (If Needed): If the chain is heavily soiled with thick grease and grit, apply a bicycle-specific degreaser. You can spray it directly onto the chain or apply it with a brush while backpedaling. Use a stiff brush (like a chain cleaning tool or toothbrush) to scrub the links, rollers, and plates.
- Clean Cassette/Chainrings: While degreasing, also clean the cassette cogs and chainrings with the brush and degreaser.
- Rinse (If Degreased): If you used degreaser, rinse the chain and drivetrain components thoroughly with water to remove all traces of the degreaser.
- Dry Thoroughly: Use a clean, dry rag to wipe the chain and components as dry as possible. Let it air dry completely for some time (e.g., 30 minutes to an hour) to ensure all moisture is gone, especially from inside the rollers.
- Lubricate: Choose a bicycle chain lubricant appropriate for your riding conditions (wet lube for wet conditions, dry lube for dry conditions). Apply one small drop of lube directly onto each chain roller/pin junction while slowly backpedaling. Ensure every link gets lubricated.
- Wipe Excess Lube: Let the lube sit for a few minutes to penetrate. Then, take a clean rag and thoroughly wipe the outside of the chain. You only want lube inside the rollers, not coating the outside where it attracts dirt.
What makes the Dish Special
N/A - Proper cleaning and lubrication significantly extends the life of expensive drivetrain components and improves shifting performance.
